"Sculptors for a Day"
"Beyond Forever" is not as far away as it sounds. That's
what students from Green Hedges School in Vienna, Virginia, discovered.
They spent a day creating their own sculpture based on "Beyond Forever,"
an artist's sculpture-in-progress. Here, the sun shines through small
cutout figures in the artist's scale model. The final sculpture will have
life-size figures. Turn the page to see how the efforts of the students
turned out.
FORMING THE FIGURE. Shaw traces Aaron's silhouette onto a steel plate
(Page 3 bottom right on web page). The soapstone marker makes a line
the torch can't erase. The students later signed their work with soapstone.
CUTTING CREW. Fernandez and Jason, far right, use a torch to cut out the
figure. On the other side of the steel plate. Aaron, in front, and Leslie
steady the figure. They prevent it form separating and falling before the
others finish cutting.
